兄弟結義，卻因權力和女人反目成仇、自相殘殺。以張徹經典《刺馬》為故事原型，既向前輩致敬，又更添複雜層次。亂世情義，怎可能熱血而純粹？陳可辛企圖拍出無良世道中，為前途不擇手段的「人」們，以及時代的風雲變幻與土崩瓦解。李連杰、劉德華、金城武三強在打殺之餘亦演繹人性；創下陳可辛繼《甜蜜蜜》後再度在港台同獲最佳影片的輝煌紀錄。

Set in China during the 1860s, the story takes place during the twilight years of the Qing Dynasty, in which Taiping Rebellion is in full swing and threatens China's imperial power. The story, based on a true historical even, tells o three sworn blood brothers who eventually turn against one another due to the harsh realities of war and political intrigue.
